Privacy
Your spots stay yours.
TideHelper has no accounts, no ads and no analytics. Your location and your saved spot stay on your phone. The few things that leave it are listed below. Last updated November 1, 2026.
Location
The app uses your phone's location, only while the app is open, to work out the tide stage, current and wind where you are, and to show you on the map. That happens on your phone. TideHelper doesn't use your location in the background.
Your saved spot
If you save a spot so the app opens there, it's stored only on your phone. We don't have a server that receives it, so we can't see it. Tapping Forget in the app, or deleting the app, removes it.
What leaves your phone
- Weather forecasts. To get the wind and weather forecast and any active marine alerts, the app sends the coordinates of your spot (or a point you tap on the map) to the U.S. National Weather Service at api.weather.gov. The request carries no name, account or device identifier. Like any website, the NWS sees the request's internet address.
- Water temperature and observed wind. The app asks NOAA (tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov) for readings from the nearest NOAA station by station number. Your coordinates aren't sent.
- Maps. On iPhone the map is drawn by Apple Maps, which loads map tiles for the area you're looking at. Apple's privacy policy covers that.
What we don't do
- No accounts or sign-in.
- No advertising, and no tracking across other apps or websites.
- No analytics or crash-reporting services.
- We don't sell or share your data, because we don't collect it.
This website
tidehelper.com sets no cookies and runs no analytics. The live tide demo runs in your browser and asks NOAA and the National Weather Service for data directly, the same way the app does.
Children
TideHelper isn't directed at children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If this changes, for example when TideHelper Pro launches with purchases through Apple, we'll update this page and the date above before the change ships, and the app will ask before anything new leaves your phone.
